Discover Luxembourg through its music, traditions, and the people who shape its cultural life.
Music has always reflected the times. It can also help us experience a country from within – its character, its memory, and its identity, revealing something that historical facts alone cannot always convey.
This musical walk invites you not only to see the city, but to hear and feel it.
We will look at familiar places in the capital from a new perspective – through the music that has accompanied the city across different eras.
It will take us from the legacy of Antiquity and the Middle Ages to the age of the mighty fortress, when Luxembourg was known as the “Gibraltar of the North”, and from there to the emergence of a national identity and the city we know today. Folk traditions, military music, the birth of Luxembourgish theatre, jazz, symphonic music, and the contemporary scene become different voices in the shared history.
We will discover unexpected stories about the people behind Luxembourg’s music. What connects Camillo Felgen to The Beatles? Who brought Luxembourg a Grammy Award? Why does the country have two national anthems? How can music become a language of resilience and resistance, and help shape a national identity? Where in Luxembourg did Franz Liszt give his final public concert? We will also explore how Luxembourg reimagines its military and industrial heritage, giving historic places new cultural meaning.
A specially curated playlist, heard through personal wireless headphones, brings these stories to life as we walk. We will encounter the music and names of different generations – from Lou Koster, Paul Sontag, Michel Lentz, and Edmond de la Fontaine to Serge Tonnar, ClockClock, NOSI, Francesco Tristano, Gast Waltzing, Ernie Hammes, the Grand Ducal Military Band, and many others.
This tour is designed as a friendly conversation. In a country where so many languages are spoken, music is a common language that connects people from different cultural backgrounds. Participants are invited to share their own stories and traditions, and to reflect on what they themselves can bring to Luxembourg’s cultural life and how they can become part of it.
We all have our own soundtrack – melodies and sounds connected to places, people, and memories. Luxembourg has one too.
