In France, as in most Western countries, selfishness – as a widespread social norm – is on the rise as the welfare state recedes, undermined by several decades of neoliberalisation. This is particularly evident amongst the upper middle classes – understood as the alliance between the core of the established middle classes and the upper classes – who are helping to spread it throughout society as a whole. For their part, there is no denial of inequalities, but rather a growing adherence to the principles of individual responsibility. Among the working classes, who are forced to become self-employed in the face of their own precarious circumstances, changes in the labour market are fracturing communities and compelling people to rely on individual provision.
This growing self-interest calls into question neither the strength of social ties nor the number of acts of solidarity. Above all, it is stripped of any moral burden. It is the product of a social system adapted to a context of increased competition for positions and resources. We must understand its driving forces and clarify its consequences in order to build a sustainable political alternative.
